Never underestimate the lowly Gas Fire... I service and instal lots of them and most people think that because the Heat input is under 7kw they just assume that they are not a safety risk. Trust me on this.. THEY ARE!!! They are designed to have natural looking flames and not a nice blue gas boiler flame. If you are having problems with your thermocouple (Having to hold the gas button in for a long period of time this is normally a sign that you need to replace the Thermocouple. This is easily checked by looking to see if the tip of it is black and maybe warped.
Just give your coal tray a good Hoover (Other vacuum cleaners are available) and maybe a blast through with a can of compressed air (Not the whole can) and then check for a good distribution of flame along the burner. If this does not solve your problem then the burner needs to be disconnected by a CORGI engineer and cleaned properly.
Hope this helps....
