Been to a house that has a gate valve as a stop tap. So won't turn off mains pressure. After this there is a service valve so will likely be relieing on this. Do these ever leak from the slotted section when turned off just worried as there is no proper stop tap.

gate valve should be able to turn it off, if not use that to slow the flow and replace the iso valve with a proper stop tap.

Gate valve just slows it but still a strong flow. Thats with it turned off by hand. Dont want to try tightening more with a spanner incase sheers it? Is there really such a high chance the service valve will leak?

Because they're cheapskate 'tards.

Decent lever valves or nothing. Not worth the hassle frankly.

The best ones are the cheap JG plastic ones that distinctlysay not rated for high temperatures on the packet and the valve body; yet team Bosnia and DIY numpties like putting them on their hair brained aheating extensions

Ill hope doesn't leak when turned off then. Theres an external stop tap underground but this is stiff and can't be turned by hand

All valves should be exercised every month!

Gate valves are designed to control flow in low pressure systems and not at 3 bar mains pressure.

But I have found that new ones will usually totally close a 1.5 bar heating system off.

If you repeatedly rotate the gate valve say 180 degrees around the close position they will usually close slightly further on every turn and probably eventually totally close the flow.

A full bore lever valve is my choice for mains water. Although the traditional stopcock with a washer is the design which will withstand about 10 bar.

Come on Tony stop it FFS.
I isolated a 54mm gate valve earlier this week......cold down service circa 4.5 bar pressure...no problem whatsoever.....maybe tell Crane/Hattersley that their gate valves arn't suitable for pressures in excess of 1.5bar.....:)
