Generator AVR - testing and replacement

I think I'm in the right section.

I have a Clarke PG2500A generator, which has been fine until recently, when the voltage has started dropping out randomly.

The engine runs perfectly but the volt meter drops right down to 30-50v then bounces back up when under no load, and when under load the engine shuts off. It seems to get worse the hotter it gets - but I might be imagining that.

My neighbour - a retired marine electrician - thinks it's the AVR module - is there a way to test it off the machine?

If it needs replacing will any generic AVR do if it has the same specs, or do I need a machine specific one?

It would need to be an AVR for that make and model, it may be possible to test with an oscilloscope, but in the mean it is tested by fitting a known good AVR.
