I've attached a photo of the wiring diagram on the front of the unit. Do you think the Live goes through it purely to power it or do you think it cuts off power to the boiler?
Is it that the boiler will effectively been set to run constantly with the voltage free heating connector being used to turn it on and off as determined by the thermostat and programmer?
Not really sure of your second question. Terminals A and B on the recever are connected to the two connectors on the block in boiler. Between terminals A and B, in the receiver's electronics, is a relay switch. This is controlled by the stat/timer, and either makes to complete the circuit from A to B and turn the boiler on, or breaks the circuit between A and B to turn boiler off.
You don't have to wire it exactly like the left hand diagram, where they have come from mains supply, into receivers L and back out of other receiver's L terminal. You can just bring live and neutral straight from boiler's fused spur, and wire neutral to N, and live to one L terminal. Doesn't necessarily have to go to both L terminals.
