Any thoughts on what has caused this? It is all along the edges of the ground-floor joists. It looks fairly recent.
Would it be rats, or mice, or even squirrels?

It is possible of course, having just bought the property, that the previous owner has simply scraped all along it to remove possible woodworm infestation etc. I have woodworm issues in other areas.

Don't think so. Mind you, it is just dirt under there so not that easy to see. I didn't see anything though, sawdust or droppings.
