ok, so what spacing it stipulated in the regulations? and does it alter with CSA of the cable as the weight obviously does.

how do you support cables run in oval conduit ( etc ) in a plastered wall for the same distance? surely that's also not self supporting?

I can see a point to clipping cables coming down FROM a socket or FCU for example as it relieves stress on the terminations as per 522.8.5
