Nige, had to read it twice before I got the 'Newsgate' bit and your still right, what on earth do you mean???

what it basicly means is you know it I know it and the "other object "overheard it

and because I wont say anything and you wont say any thing it only leaves the "other object " to tell the secret

Big all, Told you not to tell anyone  ;)

no idea where / why it origonates, butas was said, it is:

some one tells you something, that you are supposed to keep to yourself

WYL,
You should replace the word goalpost with either bedpost or gatepost,All it means is that you are telling someone something in the strictess confidence :)

 You got the one about Newgate Prison, then ;) The pale is referring to the ring of wooden stakes "Palings" that encircled Ancient Britons` encampments . Beyond that lay who knows what

Thanks Splinter. Like I said after your first answer: then I'm really chuffed for the compliment received yesterday;)
As for the others: STOP confusing me

To my mind the expression means beyond the bounds of acceptable behaviour".
