BBC TV Newsnight have just reported that they have been given confirmation from a goverment source that the data was not encrypted.

From what I heard on last night's Newsnight, they were only supposed to send a list of names and NI numbers. Somebody decided that it wasn't 'cost effective' (I really hate that expression ) to extract the relevant data so they sent the entire database! I suppose it wasn't 'cost effective' to encrypt it either.

How difficult can it be to select a couple of columns from a database and apply some strong encryption? The answer followed quickly. The job was contracted out to save money. You pay peanuts, you get monkeys!

Meanwhile, to get back to the original topic, I have a message for Gordon:
