gravity hot water pumped heating with zone valve system help

hello, i have a gravity hot water pumped heating system i was just wondering if anyone could tell me what the zone valve does there is only one!at the moment we have no hot water but the heating works fine could it be down to this the valve never seems to motor across even when i turn the clock on or off.the boiler is a baxi wmrs or solo pf not 100% sure on that, Thanks
