green and black wire in my ceiling rose

I'm changing the light fitting in the hall for one which will take a low energy bulb. I have two cables coming in to the rose (the hall lights (2) are switched either end of the hall) - one cable has a green wire and a black wire, the other has red, black and earth.

Simple question - what do I do with the green and black? Is the green masquerading as red? Should I have two earths - one from the switch and one from the lighting? My fitting has standard terminal blocks - 2 for live, 3 for neutral and 3 central.

Even simpler question - why didn't I just look at what I was unscrewing from the old fitting?

Many thanks in advance for any help with what is certainly a simple question confusing a stupid person!

Sounds like you have a switched pair ( red/black/green) and a single neutral and earth (black/green)

If the green is marked green, then it is unlikely that it is supposed to be red! You never know though.

I would hazzard a guess that if you connect the blacks to the neutral point (blue on your new fitting) and the red to the the brown on your new fitting. Then the green cables to the earth position, it should work.

Many, many thanks for your timely reply! Just finished wiring it all, both switches - and both lights - work fine. Thanks again.
