it sits on the front of the box. you screw it to the box with the outer holes and the tabs stop it being pulled in to the box then the face plate has the outer screw hole to screw into to fix it.
 
A surface mount metal clad box should have something for the lugs to sit against.

Hi thanks for replies, was a bit confused as to where they go but now I think I've been given a flush box as I have searched for a surface box and can see that it has things for the lugs to sit against.

Thanks for your help.
 
With MK ones, a flush box does look as if it is a surface mount one, I had to try the yolk against it first time to see!
 
Yes I thought that and also the picture misled me I was putting the yoke into the box the wrong way round and wondered why it didn't fit.

I cant see that you mentioned mk

Not all other makes have the indented surface boxes, so you may well have the correct surface box.

The lugs you refer to are mainly for sitting on the plaster surface when using a FLUSH box, although mk do indent there surface boxes to help alighnment.

The one you show is not mk
