If it's an innocent mistake, 4 years is the limit for chasing you.

Much longer if they suspect fraud.

Definitely HMRC? The fraudsters are getting VERY clever

Ring HMRC, after researching the correct number, and ask them if it's genuine.

The trouble is, phone numbers can be cloned too easily.
Always in writing.

Have you also checked your HMRC online account? Everything I do is through the Government Gateway

Do you do Self assessment?

Log on to the self assessment portal and it should have a balance. They will also have an email address to contact them directly on the letter..

e.g. wealthyotm @ hmrc.gov.uk

There will also be daily interest if its genuine.

No, my days of self assessment are long gone!

Simple assessment now. I no longer have any complicated tax affairs.

was it a letter in the post or an email? They will also have included references to the law that allows them to check and apply penalties.
