My LG settings include one setting for Hbbtv, where it can simply be on or off. I've tried to work out via the Internet, what it actually is/ does, but none of what I read, makes much sense. What does it actually do, in simple terms please?

With HBBTV off, you won't be able to access the streaming TV services, that are around channel 260 in the TV Guide, I.e.

265). On Demand 365
271). Channelbox
etc.

If you go to those channels with HBBTV off, you'll likely see a "data only" message. With it on, you will get to the interactive menu and the streamed content.

Oh, thanks. I have never, ever ventured up into those high channel numbers, because I always assumed they were just data and porn channels.

thats what they all say....................

I have the setting on the larger, slightly older LG set, but the two smaller LG sets don't seem to have the setting. I have yet to check whether the items on HbbTV work or not..

Despite not being able to find an on/off setting for HbbTV on the two smaller LG sets, those channel numbers work on the two sets. Which leaves me wondering why anyone might want to have the option to switch it off?

Interesting, does this work with satellite as well? I tried using freeview and it seems to be missing so many programs it is not worth using, I get
The Long Mountain (Powys, Wales) mast is a public service broadcasting (PSB) transmitter, it does not provide these commercial (COM) channels: 4seven, 5Action, 5STAR, 5USA, Al Jazeera Eng, Blaze, Blaze +1, CBS Reality, Challenge, Channel 5 +1, CITV, YAAAS!, Dave, Dave ja vu, DMAX, Drama +1, E4 Extra, Film4 +1, Food Network, GB News, GREAT! movies, GREAT! movies action, HGTV, HobbyMaker, ITV2 +1, ITV3 +1, ITV4 +1, ITVBe +1, Legend, PBS America, pick, Pop Player, Quest +1, Quest Red, Really, Sky News, Smithsonian Channel, Talking Pictures TV, TCC, That's TV (UK), Together TV, W, Yesterday +1.
So simply not worth bothering with terrestrial TV, although the TV has a satellite connection it seems to also miss many channels, so need a box of some sort to get TV, at moment use a skyQ box, and an Icecrypt STC3250CCHD box, so what am I missing.

The latest Freesat 4k boxes and more recent Freesat TVs will include HbbTV and it will be used by BBC at least.

It is just something that is similar to an open source programming language for interactive red button teletext and video stuff, rather than a more closed, or outdated version that was used before.

More recent devices will be supported longer and have more feature rich user experience via the use of the latest spec of software than older generation kit.

You may be missing not a lot, or ???
