HDD

OK. Swapped the Dell HDD to another PC that was working with another HDD. Dell HDD does not work when swapped out into this PC.

The PC fires up. THen messages come up saying windows did not start up correctly and inviting me to choose safe mode etc... then booting again.

Even in safe mode it does not boot and reverts to the Windows did not start up correctly screen.

Does the jumper on the back of the HDD need moving?

If it's a PATA drive, possibly. It depends where you've connected it and what the jumper setting is.

A picture (or two, one of the drive label and jumper position and one of where you've got it hooked up) speaks a thousand words.

Thanks again Monkeh.

Here's the shots:

The Fujitsu HDD you can see in the donor PC is a slave.

Oh, and apologies for the fat slob you can see reflected in the screen.... ;)

Rejumper the Maxtor to slave and the Fujitsu to master. That should get it booting off the correct drive (currently it's trying to boot the Maxtor, which will not work).

But it's the maxtor that I want as the main HDD.

It was the HDD in the old Dell. It has the OS on it.

The Fujitsu no longer has an OS on it, or if it does, it'll be Win 98.

Why won't it boot the Maxtor anyhow?

I don't understand?

Can you explain that to an imbecile?

Windows XP is very particular. An OS installed for a specific machine (Your Dhell) will not be able to boot on significantly different hardware. It will not have drivers for the PATA controller, for example, and in XP these are not hotpluggable.

It might be possible to get it functioning by 'repairing' the install from a CD, but that can't be guaranteed. Your best bet is an external enclosure.

OK. So does your below advice still stand?

Rejumper the Maxtor to slave and the Fujitsu to master. That should get it booting off the correct drive (currently it's trying to boot the Maxtor, which will not work).

Yes, it should attempt to boot off the Fujitsu drive. However, if that drive has Windows 98 on it, and your XP install was on an NTFS partition, you will not be able to read it.

Or are you saying I should dock the HDD in an external PATA dock?

Sorry.

That should have been posted ages ago...

If it boots off the fujitsu, can it then load up XP off the maxtor or not?
