Heating on constant, room 'stat set at 5 is correct. It will only bring the heating on when it is needed - when it gets really cold. Turn the rising main off, leave the kitchen sink cold tap open.
Because you have turned of the mains water and leaving the ptap open drains the pipework and ensures any leak at the stopcock is allowed out of the pipe!
thats not quite correct Tony as even a drip or small trickle can freeze..(as we know from condensate pipes)
you leave the tap open so that is some residue water did freeze it's expansion would not cause a ruptured pipe.. at least one end of the pipe (the tap) would be open..
