Thanks for you help on this. Today an engineer came around and replaced the diverter valve, which you suggested earlier in the thread. The old one looked pretty bad on the inside when he showed it to me, plus there was this pin in the centre which was not moving on the old part.
Anyway, new part is now in and I have a warm home again, with hot water as & when I want it.
