Heavy gate rubbing on floor

No, they won’t come off.
It won’t stop anyone nicking them though  which is why the lower crook is often fitted upside down.
John :)

That seems easiest; to drill horizontally and push a pin through. Trouble is, they're so high now, with all the washers raising them up (six I think) not sure there's any space to drill. The gates are insanely heavy . It would take two to get it into a van

you could drill the pillar, just higher than the top of the pin, shove in a brawl plug, and insert a screw into the pillar.
If you measure correctly then the screw head can just clear the pin top

Think I get u. If the gate needs taking off , is it simple enough to remove?

yes, just unscrew the screw.
It's not 100% secure, but means that someone has to have a screwdriver handy. You could choose something esoteric, like a screw with an allen head or torx
