Your lack of experience, electrical knowledge and common sense is showing, best to keep quiet. And if you want to read some real nonsense look at ericmarks post, what do you think of that.:D
Then tell me mr watson, whats the 5th wire shown in the initial post,
Your advise terminated only 4 wires.

It could be 2 sets of 2 way and you may have just left a wire hovering in the back of the box

Feel like everyone suddenly got a sense of humour! Much better than the usual atmosphere(y)
And the 5th wire I guess is the CPC which looks like it was terminated into a block as there's no where useful for it to go.

Helen, there is one other problem that needs to be addressed ( that hasn't been noticed by the essex expert). In your final photo showing what I told you to do, the wire you have marked as 2, needs the outer casing striped back to expose the earth wire and it should be connected into the connector block with the other earth wires. Preferably in green yellow sleeving.

Its not a race to answer and try to impress people.
Maybe instead of cheap digs at members, you should take your time and give sound advise thats right first time, instead of assuming things.
Nearly all the cables needed restripping, cut back and re terminating and if thats a metal box in the wall, an earth bond to that as well. but heyho thanks to you it works, so box it up and move on.

I am a member, and length of membership does not indicate depth of knowledge, as you blatantly demonstrate.

Well I got it wrong,
two-way-real.bmp
my wiring of two way you would never have the permanent line going to com, OK with this
two-way-school-boy.bmp
you do, but I have only seen that method used at school. OK for DC but with AC you are likely to cause interference.

I suppose that is why they are using singles rather than twin and earth. Or is it just the area I live in?

I prefer not to use the 'pick and mix' method, to wiring. It was a comfort to note the silence from the electrcians while pick a wire any wire game went on! At one point the OP was told to check all other lights were working ! With no mention of making safe the wiring hanging out the wall before attempting to power up the circuit.

Bad DIY advice is not what is required here.

I take it back, no thread can go on to a second page without turning into an argument:cry:

Another thicko 'spark', the reason for asking if other lights were working, was to determine if the live from that switch was providing the live to another switch. What do you do for a living? because you're too thick to be a spark.

  • You would require a 5th wire for that. This switch has 4 = 2x stappers 1x sw wire (hall light) 1x live feed. The OP had already identified the live and maked it when they removed the switch.
