and what is the best way to fix them? i take it this will prevent the damp wall problems not merely hide them? I will be putting a dehumidifier in there to remove damp beforehand

You hit the nail on the head. People cover up the damp with PB. I did offer to come and look at your issue but you didn't take it up. I could also put you onto a good traditional wet plasterer.
You are going to struggle for anyone to commit to any sort of advice when they don't have the full sp. You need to either stand in front of the job os at least have as much info as you can offer us, pictures ect.
I would lime it. PB can be worked but it throws a set of different hurdles to get over.
and am i right in thinking that the painted render which has been put on the outside brickwork half way up the wall is more likely to keep the damp in than moisture out?
If this is the case would it then be pointless using lime without first taking the render off as the wall will not be allowed to breathe anyway?
Which could lead to having to replace alot of bricks, re point etc!!! jesus this never ends!!!

This is also another reason why you really need someone have a look at your issues with the damp etc. If the external render was done in sand and cement then I suspect this might be the problem, again I would need to have a look around to commit to a remedy.
You need to do something because damp don't go well with brick, with all the low temps we have had over the past couple of winters it knocks hell out of brick if it's damp.
Offer still stands with the advice, not too far away and I pass often when commuting up north to see the family. Not after any work from you, fully booked up for this summer but I don't mind giving free advice in this situation, I love old buildings and have much experience saving them..
