We have moved into a 14yo ‘new build’ and the stair case has a few winder steps before rising straight.
At ground floor level, the stringers extend forward into the hallway space which has come up in conversation with flooring installation, and as part of the practicalities of living.
Is it possible to cut these back to remove the stringer base that ‘sticks out’ and/or undercut to give a neater appearance? The hallway is already fairly narrow. I have struggled to find a comparable staircase design to see what others may have done.
Obviously wary of changing the structural integrity of the stair case, and there is also a first floor return above which does not have such extended stringers.
To install laminate or LVT, do we undercut these to give a seam free finish?
Please excuse the carpet and flooring, both are on the immediate list for replacement!
Any guidance or advice much appreciated.
