I have a damp problem, on the bottom of my bedroom wall (1st floor). It is on the outside wall which is prone to rainfall, but it is midway up the outside wall (With the floor of the first floor being approx halfway) and the pointing on the brickwork looks OK. With it bein midway up the wall there is no guttering in that point, or anything attached to the wall tht could be causing a problem. The damp cannot be coming from below or above, which means it must be cming through the actual brickwork. Can someone suggest a way to resolve this problem.

Any advice is massively appreciated,

Thanks Jamie.

The trick to tracking down damp problems is to remember that damp can either

1. Come from the inside
2. Or from the outside
3. Can be from underneath
4. Or can be from above.

I know that sounds trite but if you go through those options for your problem you will eventually determine the cause. For example,

1. Condensation caused by a host of possible things, or leaking pipes
2. Faulty guttering, pointing, rendering, etc (you seem to have eliminated this)
3. Damp from the earth (unlikely, given its position)
4. Roof problems, for example.

Have you noticed it in just one place? Are the walls damp in cold weather? Do you have a cavity? Is it a new house?

I offer these simply as a way of attacking your problem. I am not an expert but I do have a history of damp issues in my own house and this checkklist has been useful to me in sorting them out.

You say that area of wall is prone to rainfall.
If you have got cavity walling, i.e. half brick bond, the most probable cause is dirty tie iron and cement snot bridging cavity.
