I know what I want, but not what to actually search for.

Picture an extending pole (like for painting etc) with spring button 'locks' that pop into place to stop the inner tube sliding.

I have also seen fasteners that go outside the outer tube- they look like a sprung 'see-saw with a pin that goes into the tubes, rather than popping out.

I'd like to make up a rectangular section 1m long, with an inside extender that comes out about 450mm and locks.

Any idea for the item term to search for? Ta.

That's an interesting device.....CG is thinking of rectangular section material (I think) which throws up a few difficulties.
I think I'd be looking for suitably telescoping material first.

Full Project Disclosure lol.

I want to 'mount a projector on a stick', which lives horizontally behind the sofa. Out of use, out of sight. As with most sofas, there is wide space behind at the bottom, narrowing with the rake of the seatback. I would slide it out horizontally, far enough that it will rotate 90 degrees to the vertical, missing the seatback, and lock. Hence the need for a locking mechanism. What I want to avoid is 'crawling' under the damn thing to unlock or lock it.

Pic en route.

Fair point, but there's a picture on the wall that we really like. At the mo, we drag all the bits out and use the coffee table for the projector. It's a faff.
