You need to use 2 45° bends, to create a 'dogleg' example here.
Bring the pipework forward, away from the wall, then run it up to meet the trap, inside the pedestal.

You can get quite small units, this is under 400mm.unfortunately my bathroom is tiny, and vanity unit(unless the size of a pedestal) is out of the question

something like this? (sorry i've never really done much plumbing before and i don't really seem to have a good intuition of it either!)
would never work, my bathroom layout is such that my sink is forward and left to my toilet, when sat on the toilet, my leg pretty much comes up against the pedestal......any fixture greater in width than a pedestal would render my toilet unusable!
