Highflow Heat Exchanger

X400 is pretty mild and does not dissolve the debris.

I would use citric acid if the rads will take it.

Probably just use the boiler on DHW mode at first and then later through the rads if they will take it. Increasing concentration of acid as it becomes spent.

That has the benefit of dealing with the primary and secondary HEs together.

Thanks.

I get confused. Acetic acid de-scales (dissolves lime). Citric acid will work on the magnetite. Is that right?

Guess I can get a bag of crystals from the Plumb Merchant?

You can buy a very powerful magnet device Magnatherm there may be other makes. It works like a dream, connect it in line on the flow or the return pipe. Can isolate and clean out magnetite without drain down, meaning you or we can come along and clean it out at whatever frequency takes our fancy.

I now fit connection points to all installations and use it during the comissioning process, (edit, that is not instead of the various refills, get it hot drain downs and use of cleansers, use of powerflush on old systems but as well as) the customer would be best advised to pay for it and I would leave it in, many don't see the light.......

It isn't the b all and end all but it does collect a lot of magnetite, just one tool in the armery which I wouldn't be without.

Better get the name right, its called a "Magnaclean".

Developed and marketed by Chris Abney.

Tub, Fernox DS-40. It says Malic acid on it which is in there as well as citric acid, similar stuff.

I have just got my Magnaclean. Looks like just the ticket. Think I can cut the pipe next to the wall with a jigsaw to install.

Then I will run the DS 40 solution round the closed loop with the boiler. I will close off the other rads so the solution runs around the H/E's and the first rad only.

Thanks! :)

Thanks Tony for the correction, when sat at the puter I don't have the thingermyjigg in front of me so memory proved faulty as usual.

Glad you like it Richard, just remember to use a cloth to clean it not your hand, unless you are a motor mechanic in which case you'll feel quite at home with the deep penetrating blackness of the stains.

Got the DS 40. Not available everywhere.

It's been in a week. Now everything seems to be working fine.

Turns the water an interesting colour. Seems to have dissolved the black bits and black sludge. Hope it has not thinned the pipes. I have flushed and flushed. Neutralised. Flushed and flushed. Installed inhibitor.

The Wife and kids don't understand. But I have a warm glow, that I have done the right thing!

Thanks to you guys and your ideas.

:D
