Hi All

I had hoped to conceal a door to the loft space but just add skirting. I have fitted the door and insulated the back with PIR. Is there any way to change the hinges so that I can add skirting to the 25mm thick MDF door?. Before I give up and add Architrave I thought I would ask. Would a kitchen hinge like a 155 push the door out enough to pass the skirting. Any thoughts would be much appreciated .

Many Thanks

You need external mitre at the end of skirting boards to finish off and set it back 25+ mm.

the pivot point has to be at or beyond the front face off the skirting
you will need parliament or extended throw hinges and the knuckles will stick out to the front off the skirting face top and bottom
wayners solution will work to around 90% but a "V" in skirting at hinge end
kitchen hinges only work with a flush face the 155 is degrees around and arc based on the pivot point being on the door front face
the door thickness plus skirting what ever you do will assume a say 18mm door will make the door the equivilent off 44mm thick and a decent sized leading edge to clear
could you not get a say 12mm skirting profile to reduce the problen??

you can get hidden hinges to do the job but cheap ones are around a ton each

just do a search for large throw hidden hinges

Is the door for occasional use only?
You could fit the skirting with pop off fixings or magnets.

Mirror plates might work?
Two screws in the door mid skirting level.
Mirror plates slightly recessed into the skirting board.
Lift the skirting upwards and it comes off - push it back on and down to refit.
Either angled cuts or but joins on the skirting

Its going to be difficult without mitring the skirting to take up tne movement of tne hinged side of the door as it opens. You could hinge it at the top if you want maintain the flow of tne skirting.

if it occasional use then i would use gravity
as in top edge with a "L" shaped bracket or timber on the back off the door "hooked" to the top edge squeezing sealing gasket/foam around a door stop around the opening with the weight holding in situ with a catch each side to hold in place
the catches can be omitted if the weight on the floor holds in place
you just need a 2mmgap between skirting and floor covering [door actually grounded ] to allow you to use a flat object to lift door and ease forward to open

Thank you all for your replies. I think I will just cut the bottom of the door to just above the skirting and run the skirting through beneath the opening. I really don't want architrave and to have to paint it white to match the skirting and doors.
