Hi All

I'm looking for some help. I've had a gas engineer around to fit a Hive Mini Thermostat (product no. 852033) onto my Glow Worm Ultracom 2 24cxi boiler (GC 47-019-10).

Unfortunately the PCB blew after the first attempt. This was put down to the PCB being old. So new PCD purchased and it happened again. I've been informed the hive receiver must be faulty & told to pick up with Hive / citizens advice to try and recoup the circa £500 I would be down. However, to get heating back on I still need to purchase another PCB and Hive thermostat and get it installed.

I'm obviously worried the PCB may pop again if it's not a faulty receiver & is something else so thought I'd reach out for help to make sure all of the wiring looks ok as per the attached pictures & to see if anyone has any other advice.

Thanks for your help

Pete

How many buttons are there on the front of the Hive receiver?
The wiring looks correct, but really isn't great for a professional install.

Thanks - so could be a faulty receiver?
Just 2 buttons on the front of the receiver.

Sorry I should have added that it's sent 240volts into the boiler rather than 24 which has fried it.

That is a two channel receiver, it provides 230V on its terminals to control hot water and central heating programmes.
You need the single channel Hive mini - otherwise known as Hive for combi.
This has 'volt free' terminals - suitable for the 24V controls on your boiler.

If that the case and he hasn't wired it properly (X17 rather than X1) then it's his fault and he should be paying for it. Nothing to do with the age of the PCB!! The Dual channel HIVE is supposed to send out a 240V Switched Live, as its L is internally bridged. The single channel is the only one that has a 0V switch.

Sounds awfully like it could be a dual channel hive and if so and it hasn't been wired to the boiler properly then it's thrown 240v down into the 24V contacts on the PCB, hence, I presume, @RandomGrinch 's question
I saw this on other posts about a similar issue. Annoyingly I can't see any reference to the channel type on the product description when I bought it.

Is this something the installer should have spotted or is it my fault I've bought the wrong hive?

Yes, he should have known.
Especially after fitting two of them.
Although, as he didn't supply the Hive, you may need to fight a bit more for a positive outcome.
Notice the single button on the receiver...

Thanks so much for your help - so to fix I need to get a new PCB & the correct Hive.

Is it reasonable for me to ask the gas engineer to cover the £440 for the 2 PCB's? Unfortunately as I've bought the wrong hive & it's past the return date anyway I think that's on me.

He should know exactly what he's doing and what he's wiring in regardless of what you bought and supplied to him. He should know and say - I can't use that as it'll fry the board. You can use the dual channel HIVE and could even have got away with it if he had wired it properly into the RT on X1 as that's the 240v switched live

If he wired it into the first pic's connector - X17 - then that's the 24v rail and the HIVE has fried it with 240V - as far as I'm concerned, if he's calling himself a Gas/CH engineer then he's fully responsible!!

Some installer has a big bill then. I have said a few times to have the same backplate for single, double and three channels is asking for someone to fit the wrong thermostat.

Yes, he should have known, it is not your fault. It did not take me long to find details on the boiler 1734025132027.pngso he should have done the same.

He couldn't get his head around it! But was saying that the receiver should only be sending 24v and that it was wired correctly. Obviously that's what was wrong.

I'll brace myself for some tough conversations
