Hob condemned tonight

Whilst you may have no sympathy for consumers, we are told that TNG staff are expected to repair the leak if that can be done within a 30 minute visit!

Dont Know Who Told You That Becouse They Dont Fix Anything Unless Theys Been A New Service Fiitted And Theyve Had To Move The Meter

Especially if it was just a bit of PTFE or a re-sweat of a joint FFS

Still Wont Do It Call Rgi Transco National Grid Emergency Service Not Repair Customers Pipework Service F.F.S
Perhaps you should tell National Grid that as their website says otherwise :

What if the gas leak is indoors?
National Grid engineers will always 'make safe' when called to a suspected gas escape. However, the emergency service provided by National Grid under the terms of its Licence doesn't cover repairs to appliances or installation pipework which can't be completed within 30 minutes.

I am glad correctly stated the 30 minute rule that some Transco staff dont seem to know.

Part of the British way of life is to be pleased when someone does something helpful.

I would not be at all surprised if the odd Transco guy who actually fixes the small leaks on hobs would be given tips amounting to perhaps £5000 pa? That could buy a large HD TV in each bedroom!

The reality is that most small gas leaks are just a nut that needs tightening!

It Takes 30 Minutes To Get The Leak Identified by The Time Theyre On To The Next Job Or Reading The Paper , ive never heard of a Tofo fixing anything,

Ive Fixed Loadsa Stuff for people , and the tips ive been offered of people would buy the plug for the hd tv In 1 bedroom :p

The guys are monitored and all times logged .
So tell me how he is meant to introduce himself get information from customer ,locate meter ,remove an oven cut out a back panel to get to tap, identify the leak Go to van for additional kit, strip out fittings repair the leak in under 18 miutes as 12 minutes of the 30 would be taken up with soundness testing.
As it happens this guy has done a reasonable job by leaving customer with gas to the rest of the house.
In the old days leaks were repaired free even if they took a couple of hours although they where meant to be chargeable after 30 mins, all it is is a tightening up by an under staffed company that provide a FREE service.
Would you prefer they charged the minute they walk in the door

Its good to know though that both of you would put your jobs on the line by doing 3 or 4 jobs everyday for nothing(against company policy) that some halfwit has made good money on

Think we're just going to have to disagree.

I did a very naughty thing once - my own (inherited) gas hob developed a leak (a couple of weeks before the whole kitchen was being ripped out ) - had a look and discovered that a dry joint had finally given way. Took it apart, cleaned and re-sweated it, and redid joint using gas ptfe which I use instead of water stuff anyway. Turned gas back on, sprayed on gas leak detector to check it was ok.

Whole job took 10minutes, and that included getting stuff from garage to do the job.

Disgraceful, I know, but not for profit.

When the gas runs out -or russia cuts us off- This board will be overloaded with RGI Pundits debating WTF will happen  I Keep Telling you, we`re all doomed. Merry Christmas.

Oh I don't know - there'll always be enough effluence from Whitehall to produce enough methane to keep us going ;)

Merry Christmas

They will just go back to making it from coal unfortunately probably not british coal

I seem to recall that I had to back down in a debate that a hob isolating valve had to be accessible as it was demonstrated the valve did not have to be accessible and could be behind an oven.

In that case he may well have done what was reasonable in the circumstances.

An independent would usually do a tightness test in half that time! As soon as a leak is seen the test can be stopped.

We are more concerned by Gasfen who seems to make a point of never fixing even the easiest leak.

What Concern is it of yours Agile , I Dont Work For You.

My Job Is to make Safe NOT go looking For Leaks, you stick to repairing boilers old son, becouse Im just a muppet as you put it.

Agile so what your telling me is you live in a different time dimension or you dont know how to do a proper soundness test , Did they not explain how to that properly on your last ACS.

Perhaps thats why transco get called to so many independants leaks.

And in case you cant work it out 3 soundness test

1. Initial to identify there is a leak

2. after finding and isolating the leak on hob to make sure thats the only leak

3 . After repair work to hob

Each test is 4 minutes or do you know a quicker way

Sorry for causing an argument................. I'm really grateful to the Transco man cos I know that he could have just turned me off at the mains and left me with no heating and hot water in sub zero temperatures on the north east coast of Scotland................. but he put himself out a little bit - rightly or wrongly so that he could isolate only the problem.

Thing is, my mum said to me that if I phoned Transco, they'd cut the supply till it was fixed and I was tempted to leave it till morning till I got a gas fitter out - but then I might have blown myself up or been gassed to death!!

I say three cheers for my nice Transco man...................... :p :p :p

Alison .
Dont worry this is what this site is all about you get half wits like AGILE posting on here claimin to be an expert (his words) and one of top 100 engineers in the country but in reality cant even get the most basic thing as a soundess test right.
Perhaps thats why he was not registered for several months this year
