Hi, I am in the throws of finishing off redecorating a room and will be adding mdf ogee skirting. Their are a couple of places where the skirting finishes proud of the wall (ie where it meets the patio doors and again where it meets the step down into the room). My question is how do you finish off the ends? Should it be left square or should I attempt to round it or angle it? Better still can you buy end caps to finish it off? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

For a neat and decent job it's possible to cut a mitre on the end and return it into the wall, i.e. the return piece is only as long as the thickness of the skirting. Alternativly as it's mdf and presumably painted cut the end to the profile of itself.

now thats how i would do it too,

but i do believe the correct way of doing this is not as straight forward as you think,
the molding is meant to take a 90 degree turn downwards to the floor with a mitre.
now i was told this by an old chippy who had institute of carpentry behind him.so this may be old hat now. ;)

Both LadyLola and Gregers are correct. Either return it to the wall or return it to the floor. Gregers way is a very old fashioned way of doing it. I've seen it done this way hundreds of times in Victorian properties.

yeah,i think it was a victorian chippy who told me,

Thanks for all you suggestions. mitring the ends seems the easiest option so I'll go with that plus I don't really understand the explanation of how to return the skirting to the floor!

To return the skirting to the floor, you cut a 45 degree cut on the face of the skirting, then cut a spare bit at the opposite 45 degrees and then cut this off square where it meets the floor. Have a look at the architraves around your doors and you'll get the idea. (Same principal) ;) ;)

A variation of joinerjohn's method is to return just the moulding rather than the whole of the skirting. Means the joint has to be cut by hand rather than an electric saw.
