Holed copper tube?

Particles of steel from old mild steel pipes (or old cistern?) settling at low point in pipe causing galvanic action?
Would rot the steel away not the copper.

Is it somewhere that condensation can form on the outside of the pipe? Some environmental factor in the area that could be rotting that pipe spesifically in that area?

Might just be the coincidence of a lifetime, but in the space of only a year o_O

Its a straight horizontal section.

So its not at any low point!

Is there really a hole, or it it simply condensation collecting on a cold pipe. You say it sometimes just evaporates away, that being the case I'd venture that there is no hole.
 
The only time that we have had continual "pinhole" issues was on an estate in Coniston, Cumbria.

That was due to exceptionally soft water, we ended up replacing the copper with polybutylene and have not been called back since (Touch wood).
