Home CCTV

Why not?

Where would you nuy from?

Fakes and warranty issues first things spring to mind. I have not checked the seller you are looking to buy from it could be a decent company. I would buy from a known trusted CCTV seller/shop.

I actually contacted Hikvision to ask about a seller on eBay after reading here that they don't sell direct, here's their response:

I am probably going to buy these soon - on Amazon, company looks like UK based, they are active on Facebook with support etc. so seems like a good cheap option. I know there's always a risk with self installing an unknown product, but the reviews are mostly OK and they do seem to provide real Uk based support.

Can anyone recommend a home CCTV system?

We have some cameras up that record to an ancient noisy hard drive system in our loft but it keeps turning off so we want something reliable but also doesn't cost the earth.

Extra cameras that record in the dark would be ideal too (Can you get IR flood lights that work).

I can personally recommend the Ubiquiti Unifi Video range https://dl.ubnt.com/datasheets/unifi/UniFi_Video_G3_DS.pdf. It's very competitively priced and full-featured. All the cams are Power-Over-Ethernet enabled so only require a single cable, come with IR floods and optional IR extenders too if needed. The Unifi recorder can be set up as 'local only' so you can only see it if you are on your home network, or you can remote enable it through ui.com. There are no monthly costs. Also comes with iPhone and Android apps. Software is fully configurable for continuous recording or motion detection recording, with a very nice interface for setting detection zones and sensitivity.

Your basic installation is going to be:
A PoE network switch (£100): https://www.netxl.com/poe-network-s...-port-poe-managed-desktop-gigabit-switch-60w/ (this one supports 4 cams, you need a PoE port per cam, bigger switches are available).
A Network Video Recorder (NVR) (£200): https://www.netxl.com/wifi-access-points/ubiquiti-uck-g2-plus-unifi-gen2-cloud-key-controller/
IP cams (£70 for indoor £120 for outdoor): https://www.netxl.com/ip-cctv-bulle...-uvc-g3-network-ip-video-surveillance-camera/
https://www.netxl.com/ip-cctv-bullet-cameras/ubiquiti-unifi-uvc-g3-flex-video-camera/

If you like tinkering with Linux, you can make your own NVR using a old PC for much less than £200. You also don't have to use Unifi PoE switches either, you can use cheaper Netgear switches, but then you don't get the 'all in one' network management.

Buy cheap ....buy twice ...

Is £170 for a simple computer, HHD and a 4 cameras cheap?

My 6 camera setup was over £1000 for everything and that’s not even the really expensive end of the scale.

Yes it's cheap.

You're getting analog cameras with 2MP sensors (2MP is the lowest you can go with 1080P, so don't expect great quality). They will require power sources for each camera as well as the video cable routing, this adds time and effort to the install.

Do you trust this company to protect your privacy? They have their own software installed on it which you are going to give full access to your cameras and everything else on your home network. Will they issue security updates if vulnerabilities are found? Can you be sure there aren't backdoors in their software?

Well, I don't have £1000 and my wife wants CCTV.

I went with a cheap setup first just under £300 and lasted me about 2 years. £170 is not a lot so worst case you will just need to replace it in a year or so. Maybe buy that and get yourself familiar with a CCTV system and save until it breaks then go for a really decent one. (y)

I have about £400 to spend on a 3 camera set up but there is so many different types to choose from.

Hikvision TVI cameras ....dvr about £60 hard drive £50-£120 1tb to 4tb cameras about £50 each 5mp....buy POC , power over coax ,no need for a psu
Sorry but could you recommend certain dome style cameras and a DVR that would be good for home DIY setup.
Thanks
