Honda HR173 Governor Spring

Evening.
The mower I put back together the other week has started to rev it’s head off.

I collected it this afternoon and soon noticed the spring was missing.
See attached photo.

When I fitted this spring it was a bit loose so I cut & bent it and mower ran fine.
Obviously isnt the case now as it’s gone.

If you remember the neighbour took the engine apart for a replacement crank & removed the governor arm also.

So I’ve ordered a new spring which will arrive in the next few days.

My question is was the spring stretched but neighbour said he’s been using the mower for years without issues OR did I not put the governor arm in the correct position thus this is why the spring was a bit slack ?

When the new spring arrives, fit it and bend the wire ends so that it can’t come off again. It doesn’t really matter which way round the spring goes, just keep the coiled part central.
You have to appreciate, when you fitted the governor arm you got it right - but even one or two degrees out could affect the spring tension.
I wouldn’t faff around on the thing any more - you did very well getting the engine to run as well as it did!

With what you said bout bending over the ends of the spring would this give the same result ?

Fit new spring.
Undo pinch bolt whilst holding governor shaft.
Move governor arm towards the carb this taking up slack on the spring.

What’s your advice ?

As I don't have any data at all on these engines regarding the positioning of the governor arm to governor I'd just replace the spring and be happy with it.....governor springs often run slack, hence the length of the 'ears' on them to prevent them jumping off.
I think you have done well to get as far as you have with this motor, so why not leave it be?

I guess you could slacken the pinch bolt and turn things so there is a slightly more tension on the spring - but it could upset things more.

Ok thanks will see what happens when the spring arrives.

I also asked because the throttle lever should move from say LOW "0" to HIGH "10" but i can move the lever back past LOW so its then say "-5" make sense.
I was expecting the lever ONLY to move from LOW to HIGH NOT so i can go past LOW
 
You can usually get through this by adjusting the cable in its clamp - engine end. Usually we find that you can’t get choke as there isn’t any adjustment left.

Ok
So this is where i get lost.
I mean keep outer in same place or move the oter in its clamp.
If we move it in its clamp do we make the outer go towards the carb or away.
Currently the silver end piece on the outer black piece is pretty much held by the clamping part
 
You only adjust the cable outer in its clamp - don’t fiddle with the inner sliding wire.
I’m not saying that yours needs adjustment, just that it could be.

I don't believe its in the correct position, the flat on the shaft needs to be turned closer to 90° to to split of the clamp so adjust it clockwise.
 
99% chance it’s wrong as neighbour took it off & gave me it all in a box.

I understand what you are saying BUT that would then make the gap between the governor arm & the bracket less & the spring was loose before.
If the spring shows no sign of being stretched then the spring must be made that length which means the gap needs to be larger not smaller.
 
I did yes.
But like you say a different engine.
I had to do everything backwards to the text but didnt work for me.

I moved the governor arm one way & then the shaft the other & nipped up the nut.
Started on full choke & was able to then take off choke once warm.

Neighbour was happy how it was running even though the throttle lever could be moved way back past LOW.
 
New spring installed & end pulled around a touch.
Governor arm moved forward a touch to take the slack out of the spring & working a treat.
