I have the Vaunt Diamond Sharpening Stone Double-Sided but annoyingly, i cant find the honing fluid. I'd like to sharpen my chisels to do a job tomorrow and local shops have the Honing fluid on next day delivery only. Can I use water and washing up liquid as a one off with my sharpening stone? There's no information regarding this on the ITS website sadly

The two most common classes of honing oil are petroleum based (typically mineral oils), and non-petroleum based (typically water or vegetable oil).

So yes water can be used.

But what type of honing fluid did you use before? I ask as I would be worried about the washing up liquid damaging your stone if you used oil based fluid before, and plan to use oil based fluid again in the future.

If you used oil based honing oil previously on your stone, I would be looking for a light oil again. Do you have any 3in1 oil, or baby oil, or some light car oil?

The sharpening stones are new so haven't used them with anything. I bought the Axminster honing fluid to use with the diamond stones but can't find it so I thought I'd get the Trend equivalent for future use. Is this a better option to water and washing up liquid? If so, I won't use water the soap and find one of the oil based options you mention

Looking at tool station, the trend fluid is...

Synthetic based petroleum lubricant formulated to be used with diamond compounds. Reduces the threat of rusting by up to 95% when used with quality diamond abrasive products, improving the diamond performance. Excellent penetrating qualities increase the cutting action and assures superior lubrication of every diamond particle throughout the honing process. https://www.toolstation.com/trend-lapping-fluid/p88518?

So I would be keeping washing up liquid and water away from your stone (and tools) and either getting this from tool station or using one of my oil based suggestions in the meantime.

Other people have used water, and then dried the stone- see the comments..

Thanks for looking into this. I am aware that water can be used with or without washing up liquid. From my limited knowledge, it is best to use water or mineral based lubricant. The questions is what works better?

It depends on the stone, there are water stones and oil stones. I prefer oil, and use baby oil, which is mineral oil and usually cheaper than 3 in 1.

So the vaunt stone, is it a water stone or an oil stone? Does anyone know what the manufacturer recommends because there is no information about this on the ITS (Vaunt is an ITS own brand) website.

A bit of research, suggests for a Vaunt diamond sone, to use water - deionised water.

my dad , a carpenter , always used to use 3-1 oil for sharpening chisles, planes etc

I used to use 3 in 1 for my oil stones. I only have tiny diamond plates for on site use, I use those dry. I have a wet wheel (Record WG250).

TBH, I find it really slow and am considering buying a linisher instead.

Sorry, it was long ago, when I bought diamond and researched what to use. Try a Google search..

Google search says water or mineral oil. There are various search results saying one or the other. The Vaunt website says 'use dry or with water'.
