Honing my chisels

I have the Vaunt Diamond Sharpening Stone Double-Sided but annoyingly, i cant find the honing fluid. I'd like to sharpen my chisels to do a job tomorrow and local shops have the Honing fluid on next day delivery only. Can I use water and washing up liquid as a one off with my sharpening stone? There's no information regarding this on the ITS website sadly

The two most common classes of honing oil are petroleum based (typically mineral oils), and non-petroleum based (typically water or vegetable oil).

So yes water can be used.

But what type of honing fluid did you use before? I ask as I would be worried about the washing up liquid damagjng your stone if you used oil based fluid before, and plan to use oil based fluid again in the future.

I you used oil based before on your stone, I would be looking for a light oil again. Do you have some 3in1 oil, or baby oil, or even sunlight car oil?

The sharpening stones are new so haven't used them with anything. I bought the Axminster honing fluid to use with the diamond stones but can't find it so I thought I'd get the Trend equivalent for future use. Is this a better option to water and washing up liquid? If so, I won't use water the soap and find one of the oil based options you mention

So I would be keeping washing up liquid and water away from your stone (and tools) and either getting this from tool station or using one of my oil based suggestions in the meantime.

my dad , a carpenter , always used to use 3-1 oil for sharpening chisles, planes etc

Something like this? So is it either 3 in 1 oil or the Trend lapping fluid? Is it much of a muchness?

Thanks for looking into this. I am aware that water can be used with or without washing up liquid. From my limited knowledge, it is best to use water or mineral based lubricant. The questions is what works better?
