I'm looking at replacing my hot water cylinder, and it's been suggested that I move it from the loft to outdoors to create more attic space. Looking for some guidance on the size and depth of concrete base, and what sort of insulation would be best for the housing that I need to make for it.
Thanks

Cheaper to build an outdoor insulated space and put the stuff there you were going to put where the hot water cylinder goes.

If the HWC is in a bedroom in a loft conversion, then yes you could consider putting it outside, but it would cost a few £k. Alternatively swap to a combi.

I suspect that the "yank" reference was down to you having jersey in your username. As far as I am concerned, you may be referring to the island or an item of clothing...

Could you not punch a hole in an exterior wall, making it accessible from inside the property and then build an insulated housing around it? Hopefully the heat inside the house will protect the HWC.

'Yank' reference? Where is that? I must be blind.

I would take - @frankinjersey - as a chap called Frank that lives in (the island of) Jersey TBH.

Anyway, enough of that - a HW cylinder in an outside insulated space could be doable but the space would really need to be insulated, wind and water tight to the same level as a house and may even need a little heating set on a frost stat. Pipework would also need to be highly insulated. Space would also need to be large enough to allow it to be serviced. Concrete base - maybe 4"> 6"

Who suggested it should be moved outside and do they have any experience with hot water systems?

Good grief...

If that had been suggested to me the wife would be preparing to walk out. I've moved the hot water tank from where it was in the house to spare area on the landing and made that into an airing cupboard. SWMBO loves it.
