If you want an interesting book that helps put things into perspective, try So You Think You Know About Britain, by Danny Dorling. He has analysed the statistics on various things including UK population. A few surprising points are, the number of European immigrants is roughly the same as British emigrants to Europe in any given year. Immigration goes up in boom years, tails off during recession, less jobs, so less people come. One of the largest group of immigrants to this country, which you do not hear of, is the Americans. The average family are no longer having 2.4 children, if you were to take immigration out of the picture, couples are on average only having one child, not replacing themselves, so the population without immigration is shrinking. The reason why you may think your town is over run with immigrants, this is for the Northerners, house prices and the cost of living are cheaper up North than down South, so more immigrants move in to northern towns and cities than into cities in the south. Provides a calmer look at immigration than what the Daily Mail readers will have you believe.
