How does this work?

I hold my top quality sony headphones away from my ears and they sound tinny and 5h1t. I put them to my ear and they produce the most wonderful bassy rich sound. How does this work? The speakers in headphones are very small, how do they make such vivid and rich sounds, even down to the tiniest detail?

The diaphragms inside the headphones only have to push the air a short way down the ear canal as opposed to external speakers where the sound has to travel a distance.

What about this i was sat mi car lisening to mi radio sounded great i leant mi head on the window of the car and the sound was 10 times better.

Hers another one sat in the bath and lying there with mi head in the water against the bath and all noise is magnified as tho i add a giant earing aid in mi yead.

I have noticed in my car the rear view mirror vibrates when the music is loud. Its fixed to the windscreen. Also i have the stereo on when cleaning the outside of the car, the door panels vibrate too.

I have heard one of those Bose sound systems thats always on the back of the Sky mag, they sound incredible for their size

For my birthday my good lady wife brought me a Bose dock for my Ipod. Same type of unit as the wave radio and your right, for a little black box it's sounds incredible.

Also i have the stereo on when cleaning the outside of the car, the door panels vibrate too.

Now that smoking in public places has been banned, load radio's in public places should be next including all cars driven by people under 21.

Crap.

No i havent got crap ears because I am 21, and dont subject myself to very noisy envts veyr often. As I said the headphones sound amazing when worn properly. Therefore the loud music from cars ban doesn't apply to me. However i do agree with such a ban. Aftermarket stupidly loud stereos and speakers should be banned. Most car stereos dont go very loud without distorting and breaking anyway, though mine lowers the bass and treble when its at a certain volume to reduce stress on the speakers.

As an aside i held one side of my headphones against my ear, and the other side pulled away, and the sound was awful, like a mobile phone. I wonder, if i could get 2 mobile phone speakers and play stereo through them, they'd sound as good as?

It`s all to do with the proximity of the ear canal. to the reverberating surface..........near canal Far Canal
