plumber who was going to quote never turned up...great!

i did say, as with all how much will it cost posts, get several quotes, dont be surprised if no one wants to do it for fit only

look at it from a business point.

you have to drive x miles to see / quote something that you know may be unrelaible, that may take couple of hours (drain system etc) to do and you need to pay for your time, its going to be at least £100, and you know bloke at end wont pay, best thing dont go.

because the stuff you have got is cheap!

its reliability is in question, if something goes wrong you WILL instantly blame them even if it is not there fault,

you WILL say "well it was working untill you touched it / changed trv"

labour only, no thanks

As Stormin' Norman said, "all of the above".

Don't expect someone to quote for a small job, it isn't worth it, you have to go on an hourly rate. And a half hour job could easily go a bit wrong and take 3 hours, without it being anyone's fault. And if you buy some unusual or cheap part it WILL take longer.

He could at least of telephoned........that sort of thing thats gets plumbers their bad name.

still don't see what the fit only problem is. Unless it's because he can't put his 200% mark up on the price of that part!

please learn to "quote" correctly.

It also appears you have not read and understood my post.

if you had you would not be mentioning the rubbish you are now

If it goes in the direction which tends to close the valve rather than open it, you're more likely to get hammering as it shuts.

Agreed, but I'd fit valves that can be set for the flow in either direction. I doubt you can do this with B&Q cheapies though.

He could have, but then you could have phoned him too. There's two parties in a business transaction, and they have to give and take for things to work easily. It's not all one side. I don't use it as an excuse, but you need him more than he needs you, sorry, that's the way it is. If you feel affronted by this situation do it yourself. It will take a couple of hours according to you, it'll take a plumber longer than this. Travelling, estimating, being rejected as you have more quotes than you have fingers, doing job, dealing with subsequent problems etc etc.

As for mark up, do you think a shop sells you something for what they paid for it?

ok apologies about the remark about mark up.
I did try and ring him 3 times...spoke to who I presume was his wife who said he was out "somewhere"...

Anyway, thankyou to all who give constructive and informative help.
