How much to pay my mate back for plumbing/gas work.

Thee is this very friendly and polite lady who I invite when I am having a small party

She comes on the bus but does like a lift home.

A friend of mine lives a few hundred yards from her and gave her a lift home, and then asked for £2 for his petrol!

Probably because she took 100 quid off him for the fook on the way home;)

I fail to see whats odd about helping other people out, shows the spirit of kindness to others still exists and long may that last!

I have a mate, helped him out countless times. Recently I had to take my car to a specialist for some work to be carried out, so I asked him if he could give me a lift home. Some 100 mile round trip admittedly, but when he asked me for £40 to cover his fuel I was rather taken aback.

He was probably a bit ****ed that you didn't offer. Sometimes an offer is as welcome as payment.

What sort of "party"? Does she say thank you when someone has done the business with her?

It is always a little awkward. If it's a good friend and in trouble, most would muck-in. If your life skills are such that you can't do much in the way of diy, then it's a little different. Offering and giving you friend some sort of payment is the thing to do. The couple of jobs done are quite simple but I see you really appreciate his time and work done. As it's the time of year to be giving, it s an opportunity to give more then you expect back.
As for Tony's party, our local pub only cost £25inc buffet for New Year

Which pub is that Pete?

With a disco?

Or even live music?

First time I have been in UK on new year for a few years!

We just settle most things with a decent meal in a pub and a couple of beers (OK, 4 - 6 beers). But we help each other equally over time, so it all works out.

Offer the guy a bottle of his favourite spirit. If I said no to money and was given some I would feel a bit uncomfortable. Previously an elderly person I helped out from time to time insisted on paying me, wouldn't take no for an answer. So I accepted the cheque, and shredded it.....

Essex is an odd place where many people will do favours for each other with no payment.
Tony I don't know if that is an insult or a compliment!!

At least if you consider me 'odd', living and working in Essex since my teens at least I am not the same type of 'odd' person that has sari fetishes.

Maybe we are more 'odd' than the likes of Londoners whose first consideration is their £84 charge and who uses the bus whenever possible so as to make full used of their OAP pass!

You dont know the Bloke. ;) I was round there one day, he'd disappeared off the the bathroom, complete with newspaper. He'd been gone ages, and meanwhile his Uncle arrived. Never being a man to mince his words, after pacing up and down the kitchen for several minutes, his patience wore thin, flinging the door open he yelled up the stairs, "Come on Man! Good god, you wont part with anything!"
