It looks as if the screw has snapped.

Either:

1) Extract the broken threaded section of the screw or
2) Replace the headgear assembly

How do I remove the screw though? If you pull it, the head of the screw is inside so can't get it out? Is there a way of removing any more of the tap?

can you show pics of the tap handle ,and the cap that is not on either pic.I think the cap has a female thread that screws onto the " upside down screw".i may be wrong ,but I think this screw is loose and it should not be ,it should also be sticking up ,so more thread is visible. you may have to further disassemble to get to it...need more pics !!!

You can pull the screw out, and yes there is a thread inside the handle bit, the screw is really loose and just falls back inside if you let go. I just don't know how to get inside any more of the tap?

you may not need to take apart any further .inside the tap handle ,there is a part with the female thread that I think can be tapped out of the handle. if I am correct that is like a fancy nut ,which keeps the handle locked onto the screw. if I am right we just need to figure out a way of keeping screw in position whilst you put it back together

I've had a look at handle and it looks pretty solid, not sure if any bits come off it? When I originally tried putting it back together, I couldn't screw the tap on as it just kept catching on the bit that turns the tap on and off. I just don't want to have to pay someone to fix it if I can do it myself!

i am pretty sure it is a separate piece.you probably need to turn handle upside down ,find something that will fit thru the " splined " hole and tap it out.it may just be stuck in position with limescale and needs persuasion !

if you have wd40 ,spray a bit on ,or any other oil ,leave it to penetrate for half hour. may help

I couldn't get the bit out, but have managed to fix it! I turned the bottom part of the tap and the mechanism popped out, so I just screwed it back in from the inside! Thanks for the comments
