A couple of bolts through it (and recessed) then use fibreglass paste to fill the crack. Will be as good as new. Fibral by U-Pol is very good. You can get it at Halfords.

You can use big washers and inset them so that when you either fill over them or fit wooden caps you don't see them.
 
Thanks folks. I put this issue in the Building forum at someone's suggestion so maybe a mod could merge the responses or close this thread.
