How to wire a ceiling rose - four core cable

At the first light, connect both reds to 'Live', both blues to 'N', both yellows to 'Loop' and cpcs to earth.
Given that we have only two blues at the switch and one of them appears to be to the Neutral terminal block and the other to the L1/L2 at the switch - wont we be putting both a neutral and a live/switch live in the Neutral block of the ceiling rose?

No, the other blue in the second picture is on a two-way switch for a different light.

There is only one blue from switch box to porch light.
The other at the porch light goes to outside light.

Edit - A picture of the neutral terminal block has appeared.
Apologies if I missed that earlier.

Oh I see - glad you can make sense of all this....
If it works you deserve a capital letters Thank you!!!!!!

Since the switches have not been touched, I presume I just need to work out the feeds and connections at the ceiling rose. Is that possible from the information provided?
It's possible given a multimeter and a knowledge of how circuits, and lighting circuits in particular, work, for you to do all that.

Dear all

Many thanks for your help on this.

It turns out that I was doing things right in the first place but it was only when I was sure about that that I was able to sort things out.

I finally resolved things by establishing that the porch circuit was working fine and that there was an issue on the feed to the outside light (on the yellow wire from switch 1 to the ceiling rose)

Once I knew that I was able to resolve the problem by changing the red feed into the circuit as suggested previously and everything then worked as it should.

I've no idea why I needed to change things at the switch since they'd not been touched but I got there in the end.

Thanks for your help and your patience

Tom

Very true.

I suspect most people knew how to connect the lights up without looking in switches, and going by the info given.

However, the forum does not offer guesswork to even slightly unusual wiring. Though tempting to shout out gut reaction answers, sometimes some people will be cautious to prevent a dangerous situation.

Though a DIY forum can offer some help, there is no substitute to someone actually being in your house with a test meter.

I am somewhat reminded of an incident a few years ago when a friend of mine (with minimal electrical knowledge) had enagaged in some very unwise 'suck it and see' wiring (or bodging) of a lighting circuit, having removed accessories and not made any note of the connections! By his process of trial and error, he had managed to get eveything working as intended. I can't remember exactly how/why I got involved, but I did, and I discovered that some of his lights, including one with 2-way switching, had ended up being wired with switching in the neutral feed (IIRC, it was a JB-based circuit, which helped to facilitate the errors made).

One of the (several) morals being ... the mere fact that it all 'works' doesn't prove that it's been done correctly, or is safe.

Kind Regards, John
