Hi all,

im a kitchen & bathroom fitter ( yea yea give me flack)

I went to see a job yesterday where the customer had recently had a new CU bathroom fan and couple of lights. When i went to check the kitchen was on a RCD which it was i noticed the following-

1. it was a TT system with evidence that it was once TNS

2.when i asked to see the certificate for it it was filled out as TNCS includeing a ZE of .35!

3. Earth rod was one of those old metal ones set in concrete with no tag.

4.CU was under the stairs at floor level with a blank missing (customer had kids)

5.It didnt have a type s 100ma on the 2 light circuits and controlling board.

6.old voltage operated RCD controlling the CU

7.Earth rod in the garden set in concreate had bag loads of hanging around cable not clipped back.

8.earth clamp on gas meter really loose (lazy buggers!)

9.the supply was one of those old big cluppy boxes where sometimes the phase and neutral are fused ,again he wrote this on the ticket as a 1361 type 2. ( what would you put on the ticket for one of them?)

Not good for a DI a!

one of the questions i have is there was 10 and 16mm earth going into the voltage operated RCD.what would that be for?

hopefully by the time i start the job i should be complient with the regs (part peed up) .so i said to the customer what he had done wrong and to get him back. because it was such a bad job! it was only finished 2 weeks ago and even the bathroom fan transformer hums so load its unreal (any idea what this could be it really is noisey.)

i cant believe the ticket was filled out for TNCS it seemed like he just copyed from some where and didnt have a clue how to fill it out! and this is a bloke who has a few others working for him and he done the work!full time spark.

I feel abit conscious of my self getting myself so i can self certify with sparks etc i know taking the mick and all that comes with it.but when i see things like this it makes me feel better. I know i could do better than that for sure!

sorry didnt have a camera ;)

RE the two earths at the RCD

If it was a voltage operater ELCBthen there should have been main earth in from rod, and main earth out to the CU.

These were supposed to work by monitoring the voltage on the CU earth, which should increase if there was a fault live to CPC.

The problem with this (and why they are no longer acceptable) is that the ELCB may not trip on an earth fault if parallel earth paths exist (main bonding for example), and it also will not operate if a person is being electrocuted as the current flows to earth through the person and the ground, not through the CU earth wire.

The newer type current operated RCDs will still trip if the above circumstances occoured.

Hope that makes sense
