Unbelievable....

A nationwide advertisement campaign is needed - newspapers, tv, radio etc.
I would also like to see notices in the likes of B&Q, Wickes etc warning of the implications of non-compliance with Part P in that it's a criminal offence.

Sure, it's not as ubiquitous as CORGI with gas... Perhaps they do need a catchy name. Perhaps SPARKI? *groan*

The Part P message has got to some, but worded how NICEIC would like it ;) When I mentioned about rewiring my own house to someone they exclaimed "You can't do that, it's illegal!". I couldn't persuade them that not only could I rewire my own house, but I had even spoken to the BCO to discuss how I go about doing it within the process.

Part P serves a useful purpose if it saves a few lives and prevents a few sheisters selling a dodgy DIY-wired house to unsuspecting people. IF it does that.

However, I object to paying £60 for a 1cm thick red book when it should be available to all who want it (electricians and all) for free at public libraries and on the internet. If it's a legal requirement, the knowledge should be free. Who knows, perhaps some people would have a look at cable rating tables and think "Oooh, perhaps I should get in a SPARKI-registered electrician?"

Oh, and when the hell will the IET settle down and release the on-site guide?!?! I've been waiting MONTHS! Don't they understand their own regs enough to interpret them in practical situations?

BS 7671 (also know as the Wiring Regulations) is not a legal requirement.
It never has been.

there was a time when 2.5mm only had a 1mm CPC - there is an issue with it when using a 30A rewirable fuse as it is less than the adiabatic minimum.

There was indeed my numerical friend!

Late 14th ed.

And you're right, to get the circuit back on track, you need to stick it on a breaker.

They have.
Many have ordered via the IET and received them. I got my copy from Amazon.

Oh OK, mine is probably in the post now then... Merely months after the standard came into force

Isn't compliance with BS 7671 a legal requirement? That's an honest question, as obviously I'll be having my set-up tested to pass it through BC!

No one has heard of it.

That seems to be the main problem.
And when they have a lot dismiss it as just red tape.

The situation isn't helped by its legitimacy being undermined by electricians who say it's just another stealth tax and that they have no intention of complying.

Everyone knows they have to get a CORGI man to do their gas. End of.
Have to?

Advisable, for sure, but there's no compulsion.

No one knows that they have to get a member of one of five different self certifying bodies,
Have to?

And how about notices (re sand, cement, bricks, timber, windows, plumbing acessories, boilers, radiators, windows, fans, ladders, towers etc) of the implications of non-compliance with Parts, A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, J, K, L, M & N?

I guess they would need to invest in a larger leaflet container. Seriously though it's a problem.
How would you suggest a message is passed over to the general public to make them aware of the requirements?

I don't know, but I don't think it should be down to retailers to try and make their customers aware of every law and regulation which apply, or might apply depending on usage, to the products they sell.

How do people find out about any laws? Or specifically with Building Regulations how do they know that they exist?

That's the root of the problem. People will carry on regardless as they don't know any better.

I'm doing a freebie for the in-laws which would have required notification to LABC (garage supply and circuits), now doing it through work (my time is FOC but job will be registered). When I told them it was just under £200 + VAT to notify the work to LABC I'm sure they thought I was pulling a fast one. Same old story, not many have heard of Part P.

I was slightly over simplifying things to make the point, as I'm sure you knew ;)

Didn't the very next line say "you can do the work your self if you pay the council" ;)

You cheeky monkey, trying to quote me out of context
