I need Help/advice with pouring concrete fireplace hearth

I've just pulled up a piece of 1" marble that served as the fireplace hearth. I would like to replace the marble with concrete. I've purchased a 60lb bag of "Mortar mix" to mix and pour in the hearth cutout.

I need some advice from anyone who has done a similar project. I would like to eventually stain the concrete.

You will be better off adding the colourant to the wet mix, as you are in the US have a look at the following site for decorative concrete.
