Black and white numberplates are allowed on cars registered pre Jan 1973.

However the BBC started transmitting in colour in July 1967. Why did it take the DVLA so long to catch up? (or was it the MoT still then?)

But was that a retrospective ruling or was the use of them actually banned in 1973?
I can remember the funky new white and yellow ones coming out, but not when you could no longer pop into a motor shop a get a pair of black and silver/white ones?

Actually black & silver.

Was 1973. Guess you can still get them if your motor is of correct vintage.

Chevette introduced in 75, new front end in 79, so 80 wasn't a bad guess on my part!

So if released in 75, should not be wearing black/silver index plates.
