if only you could have..........

Still on the subject of TV. A system that turns down the volume when a compressed audio signal is detected, saving that effect of having adverts blast out, in the middle of a film.

That would be good! I have found this especially bad with Sky: presumably for sound they now have a much bigger dynamic range to play with, so the adverts appear even louder. Whats really bad is when I'm watching something really atmospheric and dark (so volume up quite high), then I go to attend a call of nature and can hear the "borrow your way out of debt" adverts blasting at 120dB (I am baffled as to what "babble you with science" means!)
In the good old days the volume of all programme and commercial breaks wre monitored and adjusted by whats called CAR at the BBC and usually these days at other broadcasters MCR whether it's because of money constraints and moral amongst staff that quality is dropping regarding the monitoring or my theory that it is done on purpose these days to attract your attention to the adverts who knows?

According to the comedian Lee Evans, they know that's when you get up to make a cup of tea so they're shouting after you

Has anyone seen "ABC-1"? I don't have Freeview so I can't see it but from what I have been told they have imported the American TV thing of play the intro credits, then adverts, then a bit of programme, and some more adverts.

What would you have?
Another look at Budgies (Adam faith) girlfriend from the 60's tv series of the same name ... Margaret Nolan I believe !!!! ;)

Also an army of micro-robots camped in / on my car .. cleaning, tin-bashing, respraying, servicing, decoking - de-everything-ing ... repelling thieves ... general dogs-bodies.

Another slant on the TV adds annoyance. How about a TV where you can select two channels simultaneously. You then watch one, while it records the other, During the adverts, it switches over automatically so you catch up on what you've missed on the other side.

How about language learning or some other package which switches in during adverts ? Family quiz or game, anything but the ads !! Even music video ??

Plus a unit attached to home electrics which will monitor everything at the press of a button ... current flow in cables, resistances... a full analysis !! usage and safety ..

You could probably accomplish this with Sky+. Pause the second channel whilst you watch the first, then in ad breaks on the first channel unpause the second channel. They won't automate it though, ad-skipping is not appreciated by commercial TV channels who rely on advertising revenue.

Caused all manner of problems in the US when they introduced ad-skipping VCRs, I think Tivo were forced to remove the functionality from their hard-disc recorders. The argument was "By watching a TV programme you are entering into a contract to watch the adverts too."

I would love that, but I can imagine 95% of the populous would not wish to have a Star Trek style diagnostic report from their electrics.

Can I suggest that we also include frequency and phase offset in this device, only an electrical engineer at work tells me that mains frequency on the grid is not as rock steady as you might think, and shifts left and right throughout the day, thus introducing noise to the grid as not all power stations shift the same amount at the same time.

I would like to have TV and internet via a fibre optic system with a redundant back-up. Fibre all the way to the house, and the second fibre running an alternative route so if it gets broken the system seamlessly switches.

Oh, and I would also like it if 3G video calls didn't cost 50 pence a minute. I can't help but wonder if for that price I should be calling one of those "Listen as I rub baby oil into myself" phonelines.

Information overkill can drive one into a demented, frustrated state, chasing perfection ... only to find sensors calibrated incorrectly or unstable ..... grrrrrr!! been there !! ;)

Welcome to Sky +, does that apart from the viewing automatically which you do manually (more control that way).
