I’m about ready to give my drive a final whack then gravel it. The odd patch of the crusher/MOT is a bit coarse, (ie too many big bits, not enough little bits) due to me moving it around to level it. Can I add something to it like grano dust, or more bagged crusher, to make it lock down a bit more when I whack it? Just trying to reduce chances of it coming up and mixing with the new chippings. Ta.

When I worked on a big sewer job in the road, some years ago, we had to backfill to a certain point with Type 1, then a layer of clean stone, which we blinded with Grano dust until it would take no more, so that's the method I'd go for.

Cheers. I’ll grab a few 25kilo bags of grano, and distribute where needed before I wack it. Think that’s the best I’m gonna get it, it’s already at the right level so don’t really want to do anything major to it at this point

You are better off with a load of MOT chippings/dust.
All the block paving guys are or have switched to using it instead of screed sand. It locks in and forms a crust when dampened.

thanks. Seeing as I only need a few 25kg bags of of it, I think my options are limited to the bagged Hanson “grano dust” or 20mm crusher run. Might get a bit of both and cross my fingers…overall the existing base is good, I’m just trying to stop any unbound stuff migrating up through my decorative chippings

You're overthinking. The bigger stones won't move.

It will just use a bit more sand on top.
This is incorrect. Any stones that aren't bound by fines will migrate to the surface due to the laws of gravity. Most people level their Type 1 with a rake which separates the fines from the larger stone. You then end up with a very coarse area of larger stones which will always want to come to the surface. Sub bases should always be levelled with a board/back of shovel to keep the fines distribution.

Planning on mixing in/topping up those patches with grano 6mm to dust as that’s all I can get hold of easily in small quantities, then wet it then whack. Hopefully better than nothing?

Interesting. I’m just about to lay another driveway.

When you chippings/dust, do you mean something like this @noseall?

Thanks
(And sorry to hijack the thread) :)

Migrate upwards due to gravity? Are you on planet Earth?
Yes totally, thank you. When small particles and large particles are mixed together, small particles migrate downwards and large particles up. It is to do with mass and not weight. Get some sand and stones in an ice cream tub and and shake from side to side. The large stones come to the surface. Same prinicpal in construction.
