88% of people with income pay no or only 20% tax

Basically no incentive to work hard or save. Both attract higher taxes despite most people attempting to work hard to become self sufficient.
Some years ive paid more tax/ni than i have taken home(yes that is legal a somewhat tax (call it a treasury trap the taxman hasn't bothered to fix). All my fault of course for working so hard. In fact so hard my reward was to have my personal allowance taken off me.
That money i would have used to invest in personal welfare but it's taken off me to give to people incentivised to do fck all. (See above).

I'm sure they would very much prefer to earn more and pay more tax.

That's how it works.

IME it is much better to earn good money, and pay tax on it

Than to earn little money and pay little or no income tax.

Surely the poorest should pay more tax.

If a poor person pays more tax he can't afford to eat

If a rich person pays more tax he can't afford a 70'0 luxury yacht bur can only buy a 60' luxury yacht

What’s interesting is that the number of basic rate tax payers significantly increased in the last few years, while the additional rate taxpayers increased by 50%, pretty much all under the toreys.
