Incorrect connections in lighting (Ed.)

Your dimmer transformer converted the 240v mains to 12 volts for you lamps. As mikeyd said, you are now putting 240v to your lamps. You will have blown the lamps, they will probably never work again. You need to replace them with 240v lamps, or new like for like, and as you have no proper earthing visible you need double insulated fittings if you go 240v.

I'll buy and new transformer and replace the down light bulbs which as you say will have blown.

It seems over the last few years that 240V mains light LED lamps have taken back over from SELV (12V). As @Sparky3 said you should consider not replacing the transformer and just change the downlighters for mains LED which would be my recommendation. The problem you have then is earthing them and/or the wires to them.
Old houses had no earth to light fittings and class 2 fittings were used but you should do it right.

I'm not an electrician so it's just my opinion.

There is earth in the wires...just not used. Not sure if it is connected in the ceiling mind. I'll replace the transformer as a short term fix. I don't use the lights really it's mainly the misses when watching bloody tiktok crap
