Inset Gas Fires

I've wanted to rip my ILFE out since I moved in to my house 12 years ago and return it to it's former glory.
I'd rather spend money on a bag of coal and have a real fire that I can play with than wasting/burning gas that I can just look at.

It's true and if that is what you want that is fine.
But people have this silly ideal that they can put a fire and back boiler
in and one little bit of wood or coal is going to
heat their 4 bedroom house and they won't have to spend any time
lighting it cleaning it out.
The reality is I lit my coal fire in the lounge and had it burning for a full 6-9 hours. In that time the room was completely unusable and never even
got to a temperature you could spend any time in.
A 1kw blow heater would have done the job better.

KEEP THE FAITH !
Keep on ripping them thar useless wood burners and coal fires out !

People can take offence if they want with this reply .
But properly trained gasmen think nothing of gas fires or any open flued appliance even though we are talkin balanced flued here.
It is a bread and butter job to fit a fire to properly trained guy but trouble is the industry is full of central heating repairmen who have not got a feking clue about the basics of gas fitting or fitting appliances.
You just have to look in the CC where pro`s are meant to post and it is embarassing how little they know.
RECENT EXAMPLES
hOW DO I HANG A BOILER
HOW DO I MAKE A HOLE BIGGER.
aND as for doing the basics of a soundness test this can run into pages .

Pros my a**e

Yup I'm suprised that so many in the cc turn their noses up at gas fires
once posted words to the effect why the antipathy but no real reasons forthcoming. I love em ! servicings a doddle with a compressor of course

gas fires are nice little infill jobs. Absolulty nothing to be afraid of, especially when it was all part of the training regime.

Looks like my question has caused quite a stir and that gas fires seem to be like Marmite among the RGI community?!

My RGI is visiting next week to finish some other stuff, so I'll see what he thinks to changing ours out. It's been good to get a balanced view on it from others and it looks like an inset isn't out of the question.
